Rural Japan⏤Hozentai, Kurokawa Onsen.
Ransom Ltd. is proud to present three postcards from rural Japan in partnership with Philadelphia-based Peace Cabin. Stories from Itoshima to Kyushu: covering sustainable work & life, the Japanese culture of rest, and the pace of daily living.
Our second entry covers Hozantei, located in Kurokawa Onsen in Southern Japan.
Known for it's many natural hot springs and ryokan culture, Kurokawa Onsen is a hot-spot for domestic tourism. Japanese people travel from across the nation to visit the famed bathhouses⏤beacons of rest and relaxation amidst the beauty of nature. For over 300 years the Kurokawa Onsen has been a destination, once a favorite of the Daimyo & Samurai of feudal Japan. In spite of modernization the region has largely resisted the influence of time⏤a quiet and rustic escape from the fast pace of city life.
Out of over 25 establishments Hozentai in Kurokawa Onsen stands out as one of the most beautiful ryokan in the region. A large rotenburo is the focus, nestled within the forested hillside. Traditional Japanese lodgings surround the bath as the sound of the nearby Chikugo river compliments the peaceful atmosphere. The seasons are constantly reflected in the landscape⏤brisk mornings give way to bright afternoons and the hills are filled with the changing colors of autumn maple leaves.
The traditional environment almost unchanged by the passage of time is akin to a natural treasure⏤a visit to Hozentai enriches mind, body and soul.
